With Flex-rigid PCB the designer gets the 3D freedom and/or dynamic availability to develop his PCB. Designers often choose for separate rigid PCB in combination with flex PCB, they then connect those two with connectors because it feels to be cheaper. If you would only look at the BOM this is true, but if you look at the total cost including the connectors and the required hand assembly you will find the total cost of ownership to be higher. With-flex rigid you built modules with different PCB’s connected with an internal flex without the connectors and the handwork to connect them. Also built-in and service in the field becomes easier because you are working with modules. Building flex-rigid requires a lot of knowledge and experience, it demands a high level of quality because it contains different materials with different CTE. The end product is real sensitive for moisture and heat cycles which makes assembly a challenge and without a good quality and knowledge a disaster.
