Quectel’s Compact ROM-based GPS Module L70-R: Low Cost, Low Power and High Sensitivity

Quectel launched a high-performance and low-cost ROM-based L70-R GPS module. It adopts MediaTek 3337 signal chip solution and pin to pin compatible with Quectel GPS L70 and GNSS L76 modules. It comes in a 10.1mm × 9.7mm × 2.5mm package and includes tracking sensitivity of -165dBm and acquisition sensitivity of -148dBm. It is designed with multiple power saving mode (AlwaysLocate™/Periodic mode /Standby mode/Backup mode) and characterized by ultra low power consumption, 13mA at the tracking mode.

The L70-R brings the high performance of MTK positioning engine to the industrial applications. It is able to achieve the industry’s highest level of sensitivity, accuracy and TTFF with the lowest power consumption in a small-footprint lead-free package. With 66 search channels and 22 simultaneous tracking channels, it can acquire and track satellites in the shortest time even at indoor signal level.

L70-R module integrates many advanced features including AIC (Active Interference Cancellation), AlwaysLocate^TM and LOCUS into the compact form factor. These features are beneficial to save consumption, improve sensitivity for GPS system. It supports various location, navigation and industrial applications, including autonomous GPS, SBAS (including WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS, and GAGAN) and QZSS.

L70-R module provides an advanced technology called multi-tone AIC to reject RF interference which comes from other active components on the main board. Up to 12 multi-tone AIC embedded in the module can provide effective narrow-band interference and jamming elimination. The GPS signal could be recovered from the jammed signal, which can ensure better navigation quality.

With advanced AlwaysLocate™ technology, L70-R achieves the low consumption and fully meets the industrial standard. AlwaysLocate™ technology allows L70-R to adaptively adjust the on/off time to achieve balance between positioning accuracy and power consumption according to the environmental and motion conditions.

Embedded logger function called LOCUS allows L70-R to log position information to internal NVRAM. Based on internal 8KB NVRAM, L70-R can record around 500 events of logging data without adding cost.

With its tiny design, high precision and sensitivity, L70-R is perfectly suitable for a broad range of M2M applications such as portable device, automotive, personal tracking, security and industrial PDA.
