The generic parts number: one code enables many potential suppliers
Often our customers ask how generic parts have to be described so that the software recognises them when reading the BOM?
By generic parts we mean the components that our PCB assembly processes the most: Resistors, capacitors and certain pin headers.
Generic components are defined by their properties and not by the manufacturer part number (MPN).
The benefit: Sourcing is not tied to one supplier and can procure the components from the supplier where it gets the best conditions for delivery time, quantity and price.
Generic parts need a unique code, GPN for short: generic part number. This code is placed in the BOM in place of the MPM. The first three letters stand for the component: GPR for resistor, GPC for capacitor and GPH for pin header.
