It is well-known that automation security and functional safety are tightly intertwined. Security, however does not end in itself. In process plants security is relevant to ensure plant availability and reliability. The primary task of safety systems is to protect the plant, people and the environment. Therefore, safety systems need to anticipate security vulnerabilities and breaches in automation systems. Besides all measures to protect automation systems from external attacks, the safety system itself needs to be able to protect itself as the last line of defence. The presentation outlines a Security Environment for Functional Safety concept. It is shown that security goes beyond secure certified products only.
