Traditional glare metrics, like the Unified Glare Rating, fail for non-uniform luminaires. With a growing market share of highly non-uniform LED luminaires for interior and exterior lighting, a valid discomfort glare metric based on luminance maps becomes essential. As an alternative to the Unified Glare Rating, visual discomfort is determined by a physiological model incorporating the centre-surround receptive field mechanism, the pupillary light reflex and a position index correction per pixel.
