Cancer is worldwide a leading cause of death. Treatment of the disease was traditionally based on three main pillars: surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Although these treatment modalities can in most cases effectively treat the primary tumor at early stages, it is often insufficient to cure metastasized cancers. Recently, the fourth pillar in cancer treatment was discovered: immunotherapy. This type of treatment makes use of a patient’s own immune system in the battle against cancer. Cancer immunotherapy nowadays significantly contributes to patient healthcare, but it’s becoming evident that many immune system-directed treatment opportunities are being left on the table.
