The EMC-ESD association, along with the University of Twente, visited Marcel van der Horst at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam in Amsterdam on April 25, 2024, to inspire students for the broad field of Electromagnetic Compatibility. Representing the association (and UT) were Tom Hartman, Dasha Nemashkalo and Niek Moonen.
We engaged with approximately 30 Hogeschool van Amsterdam electrical engineering students and several technical physics students, along with various employees of the university in a large open workspace, resulting in many interactions with the students. Initially, we delivered a one-hour presentation, covering basic EMC knowledge, discussing typical EMI cases with large societal impact, followed by deeper insights into parasitic effects in components. We also explained how power quality is an integral part of EMC, as fluctuations in power can lead to electromagnetic interference.
Finally, we illustrated these concepts with practical examples and demonstrations.
In the second part of the day, students had hands-on experience by performing the demonstrations themselves. Three experimental setups were available:
- PCB experimental boards focusing on the parasitic behaviour of components.
- Power quality measurement using a "break out box" for safe handling of 230V.
- Smart Meter interference demonstration.
The students were actively engaged and seemed very interested. We hope many will sign up as free student members and attend more of our events.
