There is a clear tendency in electrifying ships, where the generator power is rectified, feeding the DC busbar systems on board that form the power supply for all AC drives, including the propulsion. The challenge here is to turn off very quickly (< 20μs!) the fault current in the infected part by a very fast semiconductor-based switch, in case of a fault in a part of this system. Most common DC bus voltages are 1kV and 6 kV and nominal currents ranges from 1kA to 3kA.
