As the world is moving towards a more sustainable use of energy in general, and electricity in particular, power electronics technology finds itself in the heart of this far-reaching transformation that spans across many different applications and power levels. A key enabler for many of the changes under way, power electronics technology is also however heavily affected by them, as requirements for high efficiency, reliability and flexible operation become ever more demanding. In this talk we will discuss the new challenges that arise in the field power electronics and outline not only how these are tackled today, but also how the merging of different engineering disciplines can open new research avenues in the effort of resolving them.
