Protection in the AC grid is typically based on detection of larger over-currents. In a DC grid, power electronics is present in each application connected to the DC grid. By adding monitoring inside the power electronics, the feedback for the regulation is directly implemented in a natural way. Depending on the type of monitoring, such as fault detection, short circuit detection and over current detection, the power electronics can react much faster compared to traditional mechanical switchgear to turn off faulty currents. Earth leakage detection and Arc detection can be added in the same monitoring system and provide additional safety
In this presentation active short circuit protection and earth leakage detection are presented, along with experimental results.
