HESS combines the advantages of lithium-ion batteries with those of supercapacitors. During the operation of conventional battery-powered industrial systems, high-frequency current changes with very high current amplitudes constantly occur during highly dynamic, complex loads (e.g. inductive loads). This short-term energy is provided or absorbed by highly dynamic (un)charging of supercaps. A patented circuit has been developed in collaboration with the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau that detects the rate of current rise and the direction of current to control the MOSFET switches in the nanosecond range and then switches the MOSFETs in the microsecond range. Exemplary markets include the automotive and industrial sectors, e.g. cargo bikes, micro-mobility, city buses, and professional power tools.
