Wound components in railway auxilary converters are exposed to harsh environmental conditions. The cooling air contains water, mist or snow. Icing and thermal shock can occur. Train vibration causes additional mechanical stress. Under such conditions the railway manufacturers demand a lifetime of the components of 30 years or more. How can we achieve this and which other applications can benefit from the same technology?
