Thermodynamics is arguably the most remarkable and universal scientific theory we have. Originating in the industrial revolution as a theory of steam engines and the like, its central concepts of energy and entropy became ever more dominant in physics and technology since then. It even applies to black holes, the most abstract and remote objects studied in fundamental science.
I will give an introduction to thermodynamics that includes both its history within science and society, as well as some of its most spectacular applications. Some of these are highly relevant to technology today.
